NOMOS
has not sat back on its laurels, continuously introducing new
components and honing its movements to an impressive level of
performance. In 2014, the company showcased its technical prowess with the release of the NOMOS Caliber DUW4401 within its Metro model.
Interestingly, the movement incorporated the brand's 'Swing-System', a term NOMOS uses to describe the assortiment. This
degree of competence has eluded many companies who have been in
operation for many more years than the small German watch brand founded
in 1990. However, by choosing to invest significant sums into the
development and production of its 'Swing-System', NOMOS has achieved an
enviable degree of independence.
Earlier this year, I reviewed the Minimatik Champagner 1st Edition which featured the self-winding Caliber DUW3001, measuring an impressive 3.2mm in height. The
brilliant minds based in Glashütte have accommodated a multitude of
parts between the main plate and the three-quarter plate, ingeniously
avoiding a profusion of layers and achieving a slim, elegant result. Furthermore, whilst the Minimatik Champagner 1st Edition was in my possession, its precision proved very impressive.
Now,
the company has been honing the balance on the Caliber DUW3001,
eschewing the standard Triovis regulatory system, replacing it with the
brand's own 'DUW regulatory system'. This
new system allows the watchmaker to fine tune the effective length of
the hairspring from above, saving the watchmaker time. Historically,
NOMOS has capitalised on similar small improvements, achieving
economies and, by default, allowing it to deliver excellent value for
money.
The execution of the movement is impressive, especially considering the modest price of £2,520 (RRP as at 25.10.2016). The three-quarter plate, balance bridge and oscillating mass are rhodium plated and adorned with Glashütte ribbing. Thermally blued screws adorn the three-quarter plate and balance bridge. Encircling the three-quarter plate is a channel revealing the circular graining gracing the main plate.
